3,339. Leaving Terumah With an Unlearned Custodian

Terumos 12:8

We do not deposit terumah with an unlearned kohein because he is lax about it and might eat from it. We do, however, deposit terumah with unlearned Yisroel if it’s in an earthenware vessel sealed with a tight lid (since he knows not to eat it). This is only the case so long as it’s not produce that has been rendered susceptible to ritual uncleanliness, out of concern that it might be moved by his wife when she’s a niddah.

Terumos 12:9

We do not take terumah from olives for an unlearned person in ritual cleanliness, but we may prepare regular olives for him in ritual cleanliness. This is permitted so that the one who runs the olive press can make a living. In such a case, one separates a volume of olives appropriate for terumah and puts it in a vessel that is impervious to ritual impurity, such as one of stone. When the unlearned person comes to collect the regular produce and the terumah, he is instructed not to touch the terumah or it will revert to untithed produce (tevel). (This threat isn’t true; it’s merely meant to motivate him.)
