Maaser Sheni 5:3-4
Ma’aser Sheini 5:3
Beis Shammai say that the second-tithe rules of adding a fifth when redeeming and of removing before Passover do not apply to kerem revai; Beis Hillel say they do. Beis Shammai say that immature clusters and single grapes that fall must be left for the poor (as is normally the case with a vineyard) and the needy who gather them are responsible to redeem them. Beis Hillel say that all the grapes – including the immature clusters and single fallen grapes – go to the wine vat (and from there, to Jerusalem or redeemed).
Ma’aser Sheini 5:4
(Neta Revai is fruit of the fourth year, which must be consumed in Jerusalem or redeemed with money to be spent on food in Jerusalem.)
Neta revai is redeemed as follows: the landowner places a basket in front of three appraisers and asks, “How much produce can be purchased for a sela with the understanding that the purchaser is responsible for all expenses related to gathering it?” He puts down the money and says, “Anything gathered from this is redeemed with this money at the rate of (the appraised rate) per sela.”
