(לא) וַיִּקְרָ֧א יַעֲקֹ֛ב שֵׁ֥ם הַמָּק֖וֹם פְּנִיאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־רָאִ֤יתִי אֱלֹהִים֙ פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־פָּנִ֔ים וַתִּנָּצֵ֖ל נַפְשִֽׁי׃ (לב) וַיִּֽזְרַֽח־ל֣וֹ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָבַ֖ר אֶת־פְּנוּאֵ֑ל וְה֥וּא צֹלֵ֖עַ עַל־יְרֵכֽוֹ׃ (לג) עַל־כֵּ֡ן לֹֽא־יֹאכְל֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־גִּ֣יד הַנָּשֶׁ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־כַּ֣ף הַיָּרֵ֔ךְ עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֤י נָגַע֙ בְּכַף־יֶ֣רֶךְ יַעֲקֹ֔ב בְּגִ֖יד הַנָּשֶֽׁה׃

(לא) וּקְרָא יַעֲקֹב שְׁמָא דְאַתְרָא פְּנִיאֵל אֲרֵי חֲזֵיתִי מַלְאָכַיָּא דַיְיָ אַפִּין בְּאַפִּין וְאִשְׁתְּזָבַת נַפְשִׁי: (לב) וּדְנַח לֵיהּ שִׁמְשָׁא כְּמָא דִי עֲבַר יָת פְּנוּאֵל וְהוּא מַטְלַע עַל יַרְכֵּיהּ: (לג) עַל כֵּן לָא יֵכְלוּן בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יָת גִּידָא דְנַשְׁיָא דִּי עַל פְּתֵי יַרְכָּא עַד יוֹמָא הָדֵין אֲרֵי קְרֵיב בִּפְתֵי יַרְכָּא דְיַעֲקֹב בְּגִידָא דְּנַשְׁיָא:

31. Yaakov called the name of the place Peniel because “I have seen the angel of God face to face and my life has been spared.” 32. The sun rose on him as he passed Penuel, limping on his hip. 33. Therefore, the children of Israel to this day may not eat[1] the displaced tendon[2] that is on the wide part of the thigh, since Yaakov was touched on the wide part of the thigh on the displaced tendon.

Chapter 33

(א) וַיִּשָּׂ֨א יַעֲקֹ֜ב עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּרְא֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה עֵשָׂ֣ו בָּ֔א וְעִמּ֕וֹ אַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּ֣חַץ אֶת־הַיְלָדִ֗ים עַל־לֵאָה֙ וְעַל־רָחֵ֔ל וְעַ֖ל שְׁתֵּ֥י הַשְּׁפָחֽוֹת׃ (ב) וַיָּ֧שֶׂם אֶת־הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת וְאֶת־יַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן רִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְאֶת־לֵאָ֤ה וִֽילָדֶ֙יהָ֙ אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים וְאֶת־רָחֵ֥ל וְאֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף אַחֲרֹנִֽים׃ (ג) וְה֖וּא עָבַ֣ר לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּ אַ֙רְצָה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע פְּעָמִ֔ים עַד־גִּשְׁתּ֖וֹ עַד־אָחִֽיו׃ (ד) וַיָּ֨רׇץ עֵשָׂ֤ו לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַֽיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־צַוָּארָ֖ו וַׄיִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄהׄוּׄ וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ (ה) וַיִּשָּׂ֣א אֶת־עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֤רְא אֶת־הַנָּשִׁים֙ וְאֶת־הַיְלָדִ֔ים וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מִי־אֵ֣לֶּה לָּ֑ךְ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר הַיְלָדִ֕ים אֲשֶׁר־חָנַ֥ן אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

(א) וּזְקַף יַעֲקֹב עֵינוֹהִי וַחֲזָא וְהָא עֵשָׂו אֲתָא וְעִמֵּיהּ אַרְבַּע מְאָה גֻּבְרִין וּפַלִּיג יָת בְּנַיָּא עַל לֵאָה וְעַל רָחֵל וְעַל תַּרְתֵּין לְחֵינָתָא: (ב) וְשַׁוִּי יָת לְחֵינָתָא וְיָת בְּנֵיהֶן קַדְמָאִין וְיָת לֵאָה וּבְנָהָא בַּתְרָאִין וְיָת רָחֵל וְיָת יוֹסֵף בַּתְרָאִין: (ג) וְהוּא עֲבַר קֳדָמֵיהוֹן וּסְגִיד עַל אַרְעָא שְׁבַע זִמְנִין עַד מִקְרְבֵיהּ עַד (נ"א לְוַת) אֲחוּהִי: (ד) וּרְהַט עֵשָׂו לְקַדָּמוּתֵיהּ וְגַפְּפֵיהּ וּנְפַל עַל צַוְארֵיהּ וְנַשְּׁקֵיהּ וּבְכוֹ: (ה) וּזְקַף יָת עֵינוֹהִי וַחֲזָא יָת נְשַׁיָּא וְיָת בְּנַיָּא וַאֲמַר מָן אִלֵּין לָךְ וַאֲמַר בְּנַיָּא דִּי חָס יְיָ יָת עַבְדָּךְ:

1. Yaakov raised his eyes and saw and behold, Eisav was coming with 400 men. He divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two concubines. 2. He put the concubines and their children first, Leah and her children later, and Rachel and Yoseif last. 3. He passed before them and bowed on the ground[3] seven times until he was close to his brother. 4. Eisav ran to greet him. He embraced him, he fell on his neck, he kissed him and they wept. 5. He raised his eye and saw the women and the children. He said, “Who are these to you?” He said, “The children whom God has (given) your servant mercifully.”

[2] i.e., the sciatic nerve.

[3] As opposed to “towards the ground.”
