We previously defined an aris as vines trained on a trellis. A breach in an aris of eight cubits and a handbreadth (about 12’3”) spell the end of the aris. This is the only measurement in the laws of a vineyard that is not in whole cubits. A breach in an aris would be when it gets destroyed in the middle, leaving five vines on either side. If there are eight cubits (12’) there, he may not plant vegetables, but eight cubits plus (12’3”), he may leave space to till the soil and plant the rest.

Kilayim 6:7

If an aris extends from the corner of a wall and stops, one must leave room to till the soil and then he can plant the rest of the area along the wall. Rabbi Yosi says he may not plant there unless there are four cubits there (about six feet).
