Chapter 39

(א) וְיוֹסֵ֖ף הוּרַ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה וַיִּקְנֵ֡הוּ פּוֹטִיפַר֩ סְרִ֨יס פַּרְעֹ֜ה שַׂ֤ר הַטַּבָּחִים֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִצְרִ֔י מִיַּד֙ הַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הוֹרִדֻ֖הוּ שָֽׁמָּה׃ (ב) וַיְהִ֤י יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֔ף וַיְהִ֖י אִ֣ישׁ מַצְלִ֑יחַ וַיְהִ֕י בְּבֵ֖ית אֲדֹנָ֥יו הַמִּצְרִֽי׃ (ג) וַיַּ֣רְא אֲדֹנָ֔יו כִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה אִתּ֑וֹ וְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁר־ה֣וּא עֹשֶׂ֔ה יְהֹוָ֖ה מַצְלִ֥יחַ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (ד) וַיִּמְצָ֨א יוֹסֵ֥ף חֵ֛ן בְּעֵינָ֖יו וַיְשָׁ֣רֶת אֹת֑וֹ וַיַּפְקִדֵ֙הוּ֙ עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ וְכׇל־יֶשׁ־ל֖וֹ נָתַ֥ן בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (ה) וַיְהִ֡י מֵאָז֩ הִפְקִ֨יד אֹת֜וֹ בְּבֵית֗וֹ וְעַל֙ כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־ל֔וֹ וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית הַמִּצְרִ֖י בִּגְלַ֣ל יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיְהִ֞י בִּרְכַּ֤ת יְהֹוָה֙ בְּכׇל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־ל֔וֹ בַּבַּ֖יִת וּבַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ )ו) וַיַּעֲזֹ֣ב כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֮ בְּיַד־יוֹסֵף֒ וְלֹא־יָדַ֤ע אִתּוֹ֙ מְא֔וּמָה כִּ֥י אִם־הַלֶּ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁר־ה֣וּא אוֹכֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף יְפֵה־תֹ֖אַר וִיפֵ֥ה מַרְאֶֽה׃

(א) וְיוֹסֵף אִתָּחַת לְמִצְרָיִם וּזְבָנֵיהּ פּוֹטִיפַר רַבָּא דְפַרְעֹה רַב קָטוֹלַיָּא גְּבַר מִצְרָאָה מִידָא דַּעֲרָבָאֵי דִּי אֲחִתוֹהִי לְתַמָּן: (ב) וַהֲוָה מֵימְרָא דַיְיָ בְּסַעְדֵּיהּ דְּיוֹסֵף וַהֲוָה גְּבַר מַצְלָח וַהֲוָה בְּבֵית רִבּוֹנֵיהּ מִצְרָאָה: (ג) וַחֲזָא רִבּוֹנֵיהּ אֲרֵי מֵימְרָא דַיְיָ בְּסַעְדֵּיהּ וְכֹל דִּי הוּא עָבֵד יְיָ מַצְלַח בִּידֵיהּ: (ד) וְאַשְׁכַּח יוֹסֵף רַחֲמִין בְּעֵינוֹהִי וְשַׁמֵּשׁ יָתֵיהּ וּמַנְיֵהּ עַל בֵּיתֵיהּ וְכָל דִּי אִית לֵיהּ מְסַר בִּידֵיהּ: (ה) וַהֲוָה מֵעִדַּן דְּמַנֵּי יָתֵיהּ בְּבֵיתֵיהּ וְעַל כָּל דִּי אִית לֵיהּ וּבָרִיךְ יְיָ יָת בֵּית מִצְרָאָה בְּדִיל יוֹסֵף וַהֲוָה בִּרְכְּתָא דַיְיָ בְּכָל דִּי אִית לֵיהּ בְּבֵיתָא וּבְחַקְלָא: (ו) וּשְׁבַק כָּל דִּי לֵיהּ בִּידָא דְיוֹסֵף וְלָא יְדַע עִמֵּיהּ מִדַּעַם אֶלָּהֵין לַחְמָא דִּי הוּא אָכֵל וַהֲוָה יוֹסֵף שַׁפִּיר בְּרֵיוָא וְיָאֵי בְחֶזְוָא:

1. Yoseif was taken down to Egypt and Potifar, a minister of Pharaoh and chief of the executioners, an Egyptian man, bought him from the hands of the Arabs who had brought him down there. 2. Hashem’s word was Yoseif’s help and he was a successful man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3. His master saw that Hashem’s word helped him and that everything he did, Hashem made prosper in his hand. 4. Yoseif found affection in his eyes. He made him his attendant and he placed him in charge of his household. All that he had, he entrusted in his hand. 5. It happened from the time that he placed him over his household and all that he owned, that Hashem blessed the Egyptian’s house for Yoseif’s sake. Hashem’s blessing was on everything that he owned, in the house and in the field. 6. He left all that he had in Yoseif’s hand and he didn’t pay attention to anything of his except the bread that he ate. Yoseif had a beautiful form and attractive features.
