3,353. Produce of Unknown Status Falling into Other Produce of Unknown Status

Terumos 13:14

Let’s say that there are two vessels, one containing secular produce and the other containing terumah. There are also two seah, one of secular produce and the other of terumah. If the two seah fall into these vessels, the produce is permitted because we assume that the secular produce fell into the secular produce and the terumah fell into the terumah. This is the case even when the volume of the secular produce doesn’t exceed that of the terumah. This is the case nowadays, when terumah is rabbinic in nature. When it comes to Biblical-level terumah, this is only the case when the volume of the secular produce exceeds that of the terumah.

Terumos 13:15

Let’s say that a seah of terumah falls into a grain pile and the owner declares the terumah for that pile to be in the middle of it. In such a case, the boundaries of the terumah are determined by where the seah fell and the whole mixture is rendered meduma because of the terumah that fell in plus the terumah of the pile. If he declared terumah for the pile to be in north, then we divide the pile in half, and then the northern half in half again. The northernmost quadrant of the pile is meduma.
