3,355. Cakes of Figs and Bricks of Figs
Terumos 14:2
The same rules as in the previous halacha apply to cakes of figs and bricks of figs when a terumah cake or brick falls among them. If we don’t know if what fell in was a brick or a cake, the cakes and bricks combine and the terumah is nullified if their volume is 101 times that of the terumah. The same is also true when there are both large and small cakes of figs and a terumah cake falls among them but we don’t know whether it was large or small; it can be nullified by being outnumbered in number or by weight. For example, if a terumah cake of figs fell into a mixture of 100 large and small cakes, we can assume that it was a small cake and rectify things by removing one small cake. Let’s say that a terumah cake fell into forty other cakes – twenty of them being four litra* in weight each and twenty of them being one litra each. Since the total weight is 101 litra, we assume that a small cake fell in and we rectify the mixture by removing one small cake.
Terumos 14:3
Flour and fine flour do not combine for the purpose of nullifying terumah.
*A litra is a unit of weight approximately 3.88 oz. or 110 grams.
