#2: Preparing Food for Shabbat

1.  The Shulchan Aruch (O.C. 250:1) writes that one should rise early on Friday morning to prepare for Shabbat. The reason for this is to make sure that sufficient food is still available and that it is clear one is buying food in honor of Shabbat.

2.  Today, many people go shopping earlier in the week and store food using refrigerators or freezers, which may be preferable if the shopping will take too long on Friday. Furthermore, there is usually enough food in the supermarkets even if one shops later in the day on Friday. Nevertheless, whenever one goes to the store, one should ideally declare that she is purchasing foods in honor of Shabbat (see Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 42:6,7).
