3,454. Feeding Demai to Your Guests

Hilchos Maaser 10:10

Let’s say that an unlearned person tells a learned person to gather figs for him from his (the unlearned person’s) fig tree. In such a case, the learned person may snack on the figs and tithe them as one does demai (doubtfully tithed produce). If a learned person told an unlearned person to gather figs for him and another learned person heard this, he may eat figs without tithing them. This is because a learned person won’t let produce leave his domain without taking the proper tithes, so we can assume that this was done. While we are not usually concerned that a learned person will take terumah for produce that is in a different location, he may do so in order to remove the obstacle from an unlearned person.

Hilchos Maaser 10:11

One may feed demai to the needy and to his guests, but they must be informed that it’s demai. If the recipient then wants to rectify the produce, he does so.
