#4: Setting Aside Special Foods for Shabbat
- One should make sure to set aside special foods that one purchases anytime during the week to be specifically for Shabbat (Beitzah 16a). This was Shammai's practice (Hillel always trusted that Hashem would send him better food for Shabbat later in the week). The Mishnah Berurah (250:2) writes that we follow Shamai’s practice.
- Today, one need not set aside special foods for Shabbat earlier in the week if one knows the supermarket will have the same special foods later in the week. However, one should plan ahead for Shabbat by making sure to purchase especially fine foods for it. (Peninei Halachah, Shabbat 2:1).
