#8: Labor on Friday Afternoon (Part 2)
- Many poskim write that business/commerce and stores are permitted to be kept open on Friday afternoon (Mishnah Berurah 251:1, Peninei Halacha, Shabbat 2:8), as the focus is on heavy labor activities or activities that will take a long time to complete. Construction or renovations in one's house perhaps should be avoided unless helpful for Shabbat.
- Situations involving a financial loss or difficulty are also permitted. Thus, work that fits into the categories of restricted labor above but must be done in order not to lose one’s job are permitted. Although the subject of labor on Friday afternoon is not so well known, the bottom line is that most activities we perform on Friday afternoon are permitted.
