#34: The Proper Location for Lighting Shabbat Candles (Part 2)
- Some hold that one is obligated to recite Kiddush where the candles are lit (see Shulchan Aruch 273:7). In fact, one should only be lenient to recite Kiddush in a different location than the candles, in cases where eating in the place of the candles will cause distress (Mishnah Berurah 263:39).
- Based on this, one should light candles on the table at which one eats on Friday night or nearby, if possible. If that is not possible (e.g., they might get knocked over or there is no space), one must light in a place where the light is at least visible and beneficial in some way (this will be discussed more in later postings).
