#38: Lighting Shabbat Candles in a Hotel (Part 1)
- When staying in a hotel over Shabbat with other Jews, many people often light in one designated area. Based on what we learned in the previous post, Ashkenazim may all light separately and recite a berachah. Most Sephardim, though, hold that one should appoint one woman to recite the berachah on behalf of the others, though all may still light candles. They may also light in a different location with a berachah, such as their room, but usually this is not allowed due to fire hazard.
- In terms of location, everyone should ideally light in the dining room near where they eat, as discussed in previous posts. However, many hotels set aside a lighting area in the lobby, which is not one's eating area or one's sleeping area and may not be a halachically valid location to light. We will discuss the different opinions in the next post.
