#53: Eating and Drinking After Candle Lighting on Shabbat
- After one has accepted Shabbat, she may not eat or drink until after Kiddush is recited (Mishnah Berurah 271:11). For this reason, it is recommended that one make sure to eat or drink before lighting Shabbat candles if needed.
- If an Ashkenazi woman, who accepts Shabbat when lighting candles, knows that she may be especially hungry or thirsty after lighting candles and drinking beforehand will not suffice or is unviable, she should stipulate that she does not accept Shabbat when lighting candles (Ketzot HaShulchan 74, Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchata 43:47). If one did not do this and finds herself extremely thirsty after accepting Shabbat, she may drink water until sunset (Mincha Chadasha).
