#54: Machshavah

Rav Shlomo Levenstein quotes a homiletical interpretation that the Shabbat candles represent a person’s soul, as the verse states, “the candle of Hashem is the soul of a person” (Mishlei 20:27). Therefore, one who is careful to light Shabbat candles properly will merit to ignite their soul (and those of their family) with a special spiritual spark. Furthermore, fire represents Torah, as the verse states, “a candle is a mitzvah and Torah is a light.” Consequently, one who lights candles is essentially lighting one’s soul with Torah. May we merit to experience these berachot when lighting properly.
