#57: The Mitzvah of Tosefet Shabbat (Part 3)

  1. Both men and women must recite Minchah before accepting Shabbat (Shulchan Aruch 263:15). As opposed to women, who generally fulfill the mitzvah of tosefet Shabbat according to the more strict opinions mentioned in the previous post (15-20 minutes before sunset), men generally rely on the more lenient opinions (2-5 minutes before sunset) and recite Minchah shortly before Shabbat. Men should try to conclude Minchah at least a few minutes before sunset to make sure they can fulfill the mitzvah of tosefet Shabbat. Some offer other defenses for the custom some have to daven Mincha very late (see Yalkut Yosef 267:2, Tzitz Eliezer 13:42[EO2] ).
  2. Poskim disagree as to whether women must accept Shabbat no later than her husband if they make “early Shabbat.” According to the strict opinion, the wife must light candles no later than the time that her husband concludes Lecha Dodi (Shevet Halevi 7:35). According to the lenient opinion, which is widely accepted, she may light candles after this time because people make “early Shabbat” for convenience and not to fulfill the mitzvah of tosefet Shabbat (Igrot Moshe 3:38). Sephardic poskim have a similar dispute (Rav Ovadia Yosef is lenient, while Rav Mordechai Eliyahu rules strictly).
