#60: The Proper Time for Kiddush (Part 1)

  1. The Shulchan Aruch (O.C. 271:1) recommends that one recite Kiddush immediately after returning home from shul. This means that ideally, one should not delay for unnecessary reasons or relax with family for a long period after everyone is home. Rather, one should begin the meal as soon as possible. However, the Mishnah Berurah (271:1) adds that if one is not hungry yet, then one may wait to start, provided none of the other household members or guests are hungry.
  2. On weeks that one accepts Shabbat early (more common during the summer), one may recite Kiddush before nightfall (Shulchan Aruch 267:2). However, in this case, men should ideally begin the meal before sunset due to the prohibition to eat before reciting Shema (from which women are exempt) (Mishnah Berura 267:6).
