#61: The Proper Time for Kiddush (Part 2)

  1. If one missed reciting or hearing Kiddush on Friday night for some reason, one should recite the berachah sanctifying Shabbat with Kiddush on Shabbat day. (Shulchan Aruch 271:8 & Rema). This halacha is relevant in cases where one was too sick to join the meal on Friday night, the case of a doctor on call, or any other emergency situation where one was not present at the Friday night meal.
  2. In such cases, one recites the berachah of “Borei pri hagafen” and the second berachah from Friday night ("Mekadesh haShabbat"). However, “Vayechulu is only recited on Friday night, when Hashem completed creation of the world on Friday night. Poskim disagree as to whether one needs to recite the paragraphs of the daytime Kiddush, including "V’shamru” and “Zachor”, if one usually recites these pesukim (see Aruch Hashulchan 271:21 and B’tzel Hachochmah 3:3). One can follow either opinion. A married woman in this situation should ideally recite Kiddush in the manner described, rather than have her husband recite it on her behalf (Shulchan Aruch 273:4 and Bi’ur Halachah).
