#72: Missing Words While Listening to Kiddush Recited by Others (Part 1)

  1. We mentioned previously that one listening to Kiddush should make sure not to miss any words. If one nevertheless missed some words or sections (e.g., a loud noise was heard in the middle of Kiddush or a child was crying), the halacha depends on the section that was missed. If one missed the paragraph of Vayechulu, one has still fulfilled the mitzvah. However, one should ideally repeat Vayechulu herself at some point during the meal over a cup of wine (Mishnah Berurah 271:45; Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 47:40).
  2. If one missed the berachah of “Hagafen,” one has still fulfilled the mitzvah of Kiddush. However, if one wishes to drink any wine or grape juice distributed around the table, one must first recite the berachah of Hagafen herself (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 47:40; The Radiance of Shabbos, p.66, based on Shulchan Aruch 271:4).
