#78: The Requirement of Wine and Grape Juice for Kiddush (Part 1)
- Chazal instituted reciting Kiddush on a cup of wine. Wine is considered an important drink that often brings people joy and also is "satiating". It is therefore fitting to honor the Kiddush by reciting it on wine.
- Most wines (especially those today) may be used for Kiddush. However, the Shulchan Aruch (272:1) says that those that were disqualified in the Beit Hamikdash may not be used for Kiddush either, such as wine that has an unpleasant odor or whose taste has soured.
