#79: The Requirement of Wine and Grape Juice for Kiddush (Part 2)

  1. Red wine is generally considered more distinguished than white wine and is preferred for use if one has both. However, white wine is acceptable for Kiddush as well (Shulchan Aruch 272:2). One should not use beer or any other drink instead of wine on Friday night (as opposed to Shabbat day, which will be discussed in future posts).
  2. One who does not have wine or cannot drink wine should recite Kiddush on challah (Shulchan Aruch 272:9). In this case, one washes first (netilat yadayim), recites the first of Kiddush ( Vayechulu), the berachah on the challah, and then the second berachah of Kiddush (Mekadesh haShabbat) (Mishnah Berurah 271:41).
