#83: Covering the Challah During Kiddush (Part 2)

  1. According to many poskim, one should cover all of the bread at the table, not just the challah being used for lechem mishneh to be used for Hamotzi (Igrot Moshe, O.C. 5:20; Chut Shani 1:85:18). This is because the first reason for covering the challah mentioned yesterday (to commemorate the manna) applies to all bread at the table. Others suggest that perhaps only the challah belonging to the one reciting Kiddush needs to be covered in commemoration of the manna (R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, Shulchan Shlomo 274:16).
  2. Some poskim require covering mezonot food, such as cake, as well as bread, since the consideration of “embarrassment” applies to these foods as well (the berachah of Mezonot is normally recited before that of Hagafen) (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 55:5). However, many poskim do not require covering mezonot food, since one cannot recite Kiddush over those foods, unlike bread, over which one could recite Kiddush if necessary (Ta’amei HaMinhagim, Kuntres Acharon, Siman 365; see also Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchata ch.47, n.125).
