#84: Drinking from the Kiddush Wine/Grape Juice (Part 1)

  1. The Shulchan Aruch (271:13) writes that the one who recites Kiddush must drink at least a "melo lugmav" (one cheekful) of the wine from Kiddush. This amount is slightly more than the measure of a revi’it and is calculated as approximately 1.6 fluid ounces (R.Chaim Naeh), though some are stringent to calculate a “melo lugmav” as 2.21 fluid ounces (R. Moshe Feinstein) or 2.7 fluid ounces (Chazon Ish; see The Radiance of Shabbos, p.50). In any case, the precise amount depends on the size of one's mouth (it can be measured by filling one’s mouth with liquid, spitting out the liquid into a cup, measuring the amount of liquid, and dividing it in half).
  2. Ideally, the one reciting Kiddush should drink the entire "melo lugmav." If he or she is unable or unwilling to do so, someone else can do so on their behalf. If that, too, is not possible, some say multiple people may combine together to drink the melo lugmav (Shulchan Aruch 271:14 and Mishnah Berurah). According to Rav Ovadia Yosef, the one who recites Kiddush is obligated to drink the wine (Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat vol.2).
