#85: Drinking from the Kiddush Wine/Grape Juice (Part 2)

  1. Those who listen to Kiddush being recited by someone else are not required to drink from the Kiddush wine. However, it is considered an extra mitzvah to drink a little of the wine from the Kiddush cup on Friday night. (Shulchan Aruch 271:14)
  2. One should not drink Kiddush wine that is "pagum" (defective) (Shulchan Aruch 271:16-17). “Pagum” is defined as wine from the Kiddush cup that has been previously drunk from and is then poured into another cup. Thus, the one who recites Kiddush may not drink from the wine and then distribute it to others by pouring it into other cups. In the next post, we will offer a number of options for how to avoid this problem.
