#88: Requirements of the Kiddush Cup
- The cup used to recite Kiddush should be large enough to contain at least a revi’it. According to the basic halacha, this is equivalent to approximately 3.2 fluid ounces (R. Chaim Naeh), while some hold that a revi’it equals 5.1 fluid ounces (150 cc; Chazon Ish). A third opinion holds that, specifically for the Friday night Kiddush, 4.42 fluid ounces is required, while on Shabbat day, the smaller amount suffices (R. Moshe Feinstein, as cited by R. Dovid Feinstein). Furthermore, one should ideally fill up the cup to the top (Shulchan Aruch 271:10; Mishnah Berurah 42). If one does not have sufficient wine or grape juice for this purpose, one may add solid items, such as ice cubes or cubed sugar, to fill it to the top (Mishnah Berurah 182:32; Piskei Teshuvot 271, n. 204).
- If one does not have a non-disposable Kiddush cup, many poskim permit using a disposable cup instead (Yalkut Yosef 271:41). Some permit using only stronger types of disposable cups that are often reused (Tzitz Eliezer 12:23), while others permit using any disposable cup (Az Nidberu 6:49). Others do not permit their use at all (Minchat Yitzchak 10:23). For more information, see here and here. For more information, see here and here.
