#89: Kiddush for Shabbat Day (Part 1)
- In addition to the Torah-mandated mitzvah of Kiddush on Friday night, Chazal instituted a mitzvah to recite Kiddush on Shabbat day as well. Unlike on Friday night, Kiddush on Shabbat day is fulfilled simply by reciting the berachah of "Borei Pri Hagafen" (Rambam, Hilchot Shabbat 29:10), though most recite pesukim beforehand as well. Some begin with "V'shamru", some recite the pesukim from "Zachor", while others recite only from "Al Kein."
- Similar to Friday night, both men and women may not eat or drink anything in the morning before reciting Kiddush (Shulchan Aruch 289:1, Mishnah Berurah 289:6). However, this halacha applies only after one has davened Shacharit (even before the Torah reading and Musaf). Before davening, the halacha is the same as a weekday, when drinks such as water or coffee are permitted (see Mishnah Berurah 89:22).
