#92: Kiddush for Shabbat Day (Part 4)

  1. The cup used for Kiddush on Shabbat day must contain at least a revi’it and should ideally be filled to the top, just as for Friday night (discussed earlier in the week). Accordingly, most poskim maintain that a shot glass may not be used when reciting Kiddush on whiskey on Shabbat day. However, some poskim permit using a shot glass for whiskey since this drink is considered significant even in a small amount (Taz).
  2. The one who recites Kiddush on Shabbat day must drink at least a melo lugmav (one cheekful), just as on Friday night. If one recites Kiddush without having the entire meal afterward, one should ideally drink at least a revi’it of wine (86 cc/approximately 3.2 fluid ounces l’chumra according to R.Chaim Naeh, or 150 cc/approximately 5.3 fluid ounces l’chumra according to Chazon Ish) so that one will definitely be obligated to recite a berachah acharonah of “Al Hagefen” on the wine (Mishnah Berurah 296:6; The Radiance of Shabbos). Some poskim allow drinking less than a revi’it of whiskey since it is considered significant even in small amounts (Maharsham 1:75, based on Taz, O.C. 210), but many others disagree and recommend avoiding its use if one cannot drink the necessary amount (Mishnah Berurah 296:9, The Radiance of Shabbos, p.73).
