#94: Kiddush B'makom Seudah (Part 1)
- The Shulchan Aruch writes (O.C. 273:1) that there is a requirement of "Kiddush b'makom seudah," meaning that one must recite Kiddush together with a meal. This applies to both Friday night Kiddush, as well Shabbat day Kiddush. We will see over the next few posts that this halacha contains multiple elements that must be clarified.
- According to most opinions, one can fulfill the halacha of reciting Kiddush together with a meal by eating a k’zayit (size of an olive, about 27 grams) not only of bread, but also of any grain product on which one recites mezonot (Shulchan Aruch 273:5 and Mishnah Berurah 25). Therefore, one may recite or listen to Kiddush and eat mezonot foods at a Kiddush without reciting Hamotzi. Some are more stringent and require reciting Kiddush together with a meal of bread (Gra, quoted in Biur Halacha 273:5; Teshuvot V’hanhagot 1:264; see also R. Hershel Schachter, Eretz Hatzvi p.47 concerning R. Soloveitchik’s opinion).
