3,519. The Coins Used for Second Tithe Sanctity

Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 4:8

One may transfer the sanctity of coins from the second tithe of demai (doubtfully tithed produce) from silver to silver, from silver to brass, from brass to brass, or from brass to produce; one may do so even at the outset (lechatchilah). The produce that receives such sanctity must be brought to and eaten in Jerusalem.

Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 4:9

Second tithe produce may only be redeemed with silver as per Deuteronomy 14:25: “You shall tie up the silver….” Similarly, if a one redeems the silver for himself, adding a fifth, that fifth must also be silver. One may not redeem second tithe using unminted silver; rather, the silver must be stamped with a picture or text. If someone redeemed second tithe using unminted silver tokens, he has accomplished nothing. Such an unminted token is called an asimon. One may not redeem second tithe using a coin worth less than a p’rutah (a small denomination) because anything less valuable is tantamount to an asimon.
