3,524. The Price for Redeeming Second Tithe
Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 4:18
Second tithe must be redeemed for its fair price, though one may pay what a storekeeper would pay when buying it wholesale and not what he would charge when selling it retail. Similarly, one may pay with money based on what a moneychanger would pay and not what he would charge. If someone violates the law and redeems a maneh’s worth of second tithe with a perutah (which is far, far less than its value), the sanctity is nevertheless transferred.
Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 4:19
Let’s say that a sela (a denomination of coin) was missing a sixth or less of its weight. If it would be accepted as currency, even if only with difficulty, one may transfer the sanctity of a sela’s worth of second tithe to it without hesitation. If he redeemed second tithe using a sela that was later found to be unfit for use as currency, he must exchange it.
