#180: Besamim (Part 5)

  1. We mentioned in a previous post that one recites a berachah on besamim as part of Havdalah only until dawn of Sunday morning. If Havdalah is recited after that, the berachah on besamim is not included, since the neshamah yeteirah (extra soul for Shabbat) has already long departed (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 299:5).
  2. One should not dispose of besamim that were used to recite a berachah on during Havdalah by throwing them directly into the trash. Rather, one should dispose of them in a more dignified manner (Kaf Hachaim 297:11; Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 61:13), such as placing them in another bag first. If the besamim no longer have any smell whatsoever, some hold they may be disposed of in a normal fashion(see Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah, ibid., n.33; see also https://www.yeshiva.org.il/ask/13538).
