3,554. If the Exchange Rate Changes
Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 8:5
If someone has second tithe wine and he lends jugs for that wine, second tithe doesn’t acquire the jugs, even if he seals them. Let’s say that someone stores second tithe wine in jugs without expressing his intention. If he designated some jugs as second tithe before sealing them, second tithe doesn’t acquire them; if he designated them as second tithe after sealing them, then second tithe does acquire the jugs. If he stored a reviis (about 3.3 oz.) of secular wine in the jug, or if he put in second tithe oil, vinegar, brine or honey without making a declaration, second tithe does not acquire the jugs, whether he sealed them before or after the declaration.
Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 8:6
If a deer purchased with second tithe money dies, it must be buried with the hide. If it was bought alive and slaughtered, after which it was rendered unclean, it must be redeemed like second tithe produce that was rendered ritually unclean. Let’s say that someone deposits a dinar (a denomination of coin) of second tithe money against which to purchase food until he has used up its value and it is rendered secular. If the exchange rate was twenty meah to a dinar and he ate ten meah of food and then the exchange rate changes so that it’s forty meah to a dinar, then he must spend another twenty meah on food before his second tithe dinar is rendered secular. If the exchange rate goes the other way so that it becomes ten meah to a dinar, then he only need spend another five meah on food and the dinar is rendered secular.
