3,560. Neta Revai Is Like Maaser Sheini

Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 9:2

One who wants to redeem neta revai does so the same way one would redeem second tithe; if he redeems it for himself, he must add a fifth. It may not be redeemed until it has reached the stage of tithing. This is derived from Leviticus 19:25, which says “to increase its produce for you.” From this we see that the rule only applies once it is considered produce. It can’t be redeemed while still connected to the ground, the same as with second tithe, and it belongs to God, the same as with second tithe. Therefore, neta revai can’t be acquired as a gift unless it was given before it ripened. In other ways, however, such as eating, drinking and redeeming it, the laws of neta revai are the same as those for second tithe.

Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 9:3

One who redeems a vineyard in its fourth year may redeem it as grapes or as wine. The same is true with olives (i.e., they may be redeemed as oil.) Other fruits, however, may only be redeemed in their natural forms.
