#182: The Havdalah Candle (Part 2)

  1. We mentioned yesterday that one should ideally use a candle with at least two wicks for Havdalah. To qualify as two wicks, wax must separate between the two wicks, but two wicks with wax surrounding both together, without any wax in between them, does not qualify as a “torch” (Mishnah Berurah 298:8). One should make sure that one’s Havdalah candle is acceptable according to this standard, as a few candles sold on the market do not qualify.
  2. Two matches joined together also qualify as a “torch,” provided they are held at an angle from each other. If they are both held vertically one next to the other, this would not qualify as a “torch” for the same reason as mentioned in halacha 1 (Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 61:26).
