3,610. Remaining in Jerusalem Overnight
Hilchos Bikkurim 3:14
The person who brings first fruits must remain in Jerusalem overnight. Therefore, after bringing first fruits to the Temple, reciting the “confession” and bringing a peace offerings, one may not leave Jerusalem for home that same day. Rather, one must remain in Jerusalem overnight and go back home the next day. This is derived from Deuteronomy 16:7: “You shall turn around in the morning and go back to your tent.” Whenever one leaves after visiting the Temple, it must be in the morning.
We have seen that first fruits require seven things. (1) They must be brought to Jerusalem; (2) they must be brought in a vessel; (3) the first fruits “confession” must be recited; (4) the first fruits must be brought with a peace offering; (5) they must be brought with song; (6) they must be waved; and (7) the one who brings them must remain in Jerusalem overnight.
Hilchos Bikkurim 4:1
One who brings first fruits must always bring a peace offering, have song recited, have the first fruits waved, and remain in Jerusalem overnight. However, when it comes to the first fruits “confession,” there are those who must bring first fruits but who do not recite the “confession.”
