3,649. Making Challah for an Unlearned Person

Hilchos Bikkurim 8:12

Challah may not be made in a state of ritual cleanliness for an unlearned person, though one may make a secular loaf for him in a state of purity. Accordingly, a learned person may mix the dough and take the appropriate volume of challah from it. He puts the challah in a utensil of dung, stone or clay, which are not susceptible to ritual impurity. When the unlearned person comes, he takes both the dough and the challah. He is cautioned not to touch the challah out of fear that it revert to tevel (its untithed state). [This doesn’t actually happen; it’s simply to protect the sanctity of the challah.] This course of action is permitted so that baker can earn a living.

Hilchos Bikkurim 8:13

The wife of a learned person is permitted to sift and strain flour with the wife of an unlearned person, but once water has been mixed with the dough, she should not assist her. This is because the wife of an unlearned person makes dough in a state of ritual uncleanliness. One may likewise not knead dough with a baker who works in ritual impurity. This is in order not to assist someone in committing a transgression. However, one may assist him in carrying bread to the bakery.
