3,696. The Sheep Put Aside for Doubtful Firstborn Donkeys
Hilchos Bikkurim 12:22
Similar to the case in the previous halacha, if a Jew buys a donkey from a non-Jew and it gives birth to a male, but we don’t know whether it gave birth before, the owner redeems it with a sheep that he may keep because the status of the donkey’s offspring is in doubt.
Hilchos Bikkurim 12:23
Let’s say that a person has ten sheep, each of which was put aside because of a doubt concerning a firstborn donkey. These animals are secular in every way and must be tithed like any other animals. One of these ten sheep must be taken as animal tithe, while the others remain the owner’s property.
