3,708. Not Fertilizing One's Field During Shemittah
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 1:22
One may prune a tree as follows: he either cuts the branches near the ground or he cuts those above ten handbreadths (about 30 inches). If a tree is split, it may be tied together during shemittah; the idea isn’t that the tree will un-split, merely that it won’t get any worse.
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 2:1
One may not move manure from his courtyard to his field during shemittah since it appears that he’s fertilizing his field in order to improve it for planting. If he did move it, but he piled it into a dung heap, it is permitted. One may not make a dung heap in his field until after the time when one normally fertilizes his field, such as after tilling the soil, which is when gourds shrivel. One may not make a dung heap smaller than 150 seah (about 375 gallons) in order to make it obvious that it’s a dung heap; if one wants to make it larger, he may do so. If he has only a small amount of dung in his field before shemittah begins, he can add to it throughout shemittah. One may not make more than three dung heaps in a field that’s large enough to plant a seah of seed (which is about the size of half a football field).
