3,712. Removing Stones From a Field

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 2:8

The previous halacha (about leaving a row of stones from a wall) applies when one wants to improve his field or started removing the stones during shemittah. If he does mean to improve his field or if he started removing stones before shemittah, then he can take whatever he wants during shemittah, removing stones all the way down to the ground. Similarly, if one was removing stones from another’s field, he may do so all the way down to the ground even if he has rented the field in exchange for a percentage of the produce (i.e., he’s not tantamount to the owner).

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 2:9

Let’s say that there’s a field that has stones that would be dislodged by a plow or that were covered by soil and then uncovered. If there are two stones that are so large that each would take two people to carry them, they may be removed; stones smaller than this may not be removed.
