There was a stone with three steps in front of the Menorah where the kohein would stand when lighting the lamps. He also put the jars of oil, the tongs and the shovels on it while lighting.
Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 3:12
The Table (on which the showbread was placed) was twelve handbreadths long by six handbreadths wide (about 3’ x 1.5’). It was placed so that its length ran parallel to the length of the Temple and its width ran parallel to the width of the Temple. In fact, with the exception of the Ark, all the Temple furniture was positioned so that their lengths and widths were parallel with the length and width of the Temple. The Ark’s length, however, ran parallel to the Temple’s width. The lamps of the Menorah likewise ran parallel with the Temple’s width, i.e., north to south.
