Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 3:15

Let us now discuss the twenty-eight rods of the Table. The first loaf of showbread was placed directly on the Table. Three rods were placed between the first and second loaves, then three more between each of the subsequent loaves. There were only two rods between the fifth and the sixth loaves because there were no more loaves on top of the sixth. We see that there were fourteen rods per row of showbread.

There were two tables in the entry hall near the entrance to the Temple – one of marble and one of gold. The showbread was placed on the marble table before being brought in and on the gold table when it was brought out. The tables were made of different materials so that we might ascend in matters of sanctity rather than descend.
