3,870. Chambers on Both Holy and Secular Ground
Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 6:7
Some chambers were built on holy ground but opened on secular ground. In such cases, if the roofs were level with the ground of the courtyard, the interiors of these chambers were secular but their roofs were holy. If they weren’t level with the courtyard, the roofs are also secular. This is because the roofs and lofts of the Temple buildings were not sanctified. Accordingly, sacrifices of the greatest sanctity could not be eaten on these roofs, while sacrifices of lesser sanctity couldn’t be slaughtered there.
Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 6:8
Other chambers were built on secular ground but opened to holy ground. Their interiors were considered holy vis-à-vis eating sacrifices of the highest sanctity but sacrifices of lesser sanctity weren’t slaughtered there. Similarly, one who enters such a chamber in a state of ritual impurity is not liable. The roofs of these chambers are considered completely secular ground.
