3,920. How the Kohein Gadol is Installed
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 4:13
The Kohein Gadol is installed by wearing the garments as follows: He puts on the eight garments worn by the Kohein Gadol and removes them. He then repeats this process for a total of seven days, as per Exodus 29:30: “The kohein from his sons who serves in his place will put them on for seven days.” Just as he dons the garments for seven days, he is likewise anointed with the oil for seven days. If he served before being installed by wearing the garments all seven days or by being anointed all seven days, the service is valid. Being installed through garments or anointing just once makes him the Kohein Gadol in all aspects.
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 4:14
The only difference between a Kohein Gadol who was installed through anointing and one who was installed through wearing the garments is the obligation for the Kohein Gadol to bring an offering of a bull when having committed a violation for which one must bring a sin offering, as per Leviticus 4:3: “If the anointed kohein sins....” They are identical in all other ways.
