#268: Making Ice

1. Most Ashkenazi poskim recommend refraining from making ice on Shabbat, since indirectly transforming water into ice constitutes “nolad” just as ice or congealed solid melting into a liquid constitutes nolad (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 10:4; “The 39 Melochos, p.370; Shevet Halevi 3:55). We will discuss tomorrow whether these opinions allow making ice in certain cases.

2. Some Ashkenazi poskim permit making ice on Shabbat (Tzitz Eliezer 6:34), as they maintain that nolad applies only to solid being transformed into liquid, but not transforming a liquid into a solid by placing it in the freezer. Sephardic poskim adopt the lenient approach as well, since Sephardim are generally lenient about nolad in any case (Ohr L’tzion 2:32).
