#269: Making Ice or a Partial Solid
1. We learned yesterday that many Ashkenazi poskim believe that making ice on Shabbat constitutes “nolad” and is therefore forbidden rabbinically, even if the ice would be used on Shabbat. However, nolad is permitted even for Ashkenazim in cases of need. Therefore in cases of need, such as when having guests, or if it is hot, making ice is permitted (Mishnah Berurah 318:107; Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 10:4; Peninei Halacha, Shabbat 12:12).
2. It is forbidden to make a drink into a partial solid, such as a “slushie,” if one must shake up pieces of ice in the process, causing them to turn partially into liquid. The reason is that this is similar to crushing ice into liquid, which we learned previously is forbidden according to all opinions.
