#282: The Condition of "Miyad" - Sorting for Immediate Use
1. We learned yesterday that one of the 3 conditions needed to permit borer is that one must do so for immediate use (miyad). According to the accepted halacha, this does not mean that one must literally select the “food” one desires immediately prior to eating, but rather immediately prior to the meal in which one plans to eat the food (Rema, O.C. 319:1).
2. Even if the meal lasts for a few hours, one may still sort immediately before the meal begins, and one need not sort during the meal (Mishnah Berurah 319:4). Thus, one may remove grapes to be eaten from a bowl that also contains rotten grapes before Shabbat lunch (“food” from “waste”), even if the grapes will only be served for dessert at the end of the meal.
