#293: The Condition of “Ochel Mitoch Pesolet” & Definition of “Two Types”

1. In general, foods that have a very different taste and different appearance than each other are considered two types.

2. However, poskim dispute whether a mixture of sour apples and sweet apples, or a mixture of green apples and red apples, constitutes one type (& no restrictions of borer apply) or two types (and one must pick out the ones desired from the ones not desired). (Orchot Shabbat 3:35, R. Ribiat in 39 Melachos p.393).

3. A mixture of one type of food with one piece out of many that is rotten or inedible is also defined as a mixture of two types. Therefore, one may not remove a piece of lettuce that is brown or rotten from a lettuce head or a pile of lettuce pieces. (Mishna Berura 319:7)

4. In the above cases of #2 and #3, and any cases about which one is uncertain as to whether there are one or two types, all one needs to do is make sure to take out the pieces one wants (ochel) from those not desired at that time (pesolet), and make sure it is done by hand (b’yad) and immediately before the meal (miyad).
