#299: Defining a Mixture for Borer - Solids in Liquids
1. Most poskim hold that solids mixed in a liquid are considered a mixture and are subject to borer (Mishna Berura 319:61), while some disagree (Chazon Ovadia of R. Ovadia Yosef, vol. 4, Borer 23, though even he says it is good to be strict).
2. According to the majority and more accepted opinion, one may not remove a fly or other “waste” from a drink or soup. Rather, one should take a little bit of the liquid together with the “waste”. According to the minority opinion, this is permitted. (see sources quoted above)
3. According to the majority and more accepted opinion, canned foods in liquid, such as tuna in water/oil, corn in water, or beans in sauce are considered a mixture and subject to the rules of borer. One may not remove the liquid from the can, but must rather try to take the food (Ochel) out from the liquid (Pesolet).
