#313: Specialized Utensils

1. Even in cases where tochen is permitted (such as with meat or eggs, as discussed previously, or according to the opinions that allow immediately before eating), one may not use a specialized chopper (Shulchan Aruch Harav 321:8, Piskei Teshuvot 321:13).

2. Therefore, one may not use a garlic press, metal grater, pepper grinder, vegetable chopper, or onion slicer (Piskei Teshuvot 321:13). Most poskim hold that one may use an egg slicer, since it is composed of a number of regular knives but it is not considered a special chopping device (Yalkut Yosef 321:17, Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 6:3). Knives may definitely be used according to all opinions.
