4,047. Blemishing a Sacrificial Animal

If a person causes a blemish in an animal designated for an offering, such as if he blinded it or severed a limb, he is subject to the penalty of lashes. Regarding offerings, Leviticus 22:21 teaches, “It shall not have any blemish in it.” Our oral tradition teaches that this is a prohibition against blemishing such an animal. Lashes are only given for this when the Temple is standing, because then an animal that could have been offered was invalidated. Nowadays, even though doing so violates a prohibition, one is not subject to lashes.

If person A caused a blemish in a sacrificial animal and then person B caused a second blemish, person B isn’t subject to the penalty of lashes.
